Personalisation

Personalisation is nothing new. Search results will differ depending on who is searching, what device they’re searching from (their phone, tablet or desktop) and where they’re located. It’s all part of Google’s efforts to deliver people the content that is the most relevant and useful for them.

This is important because it changes the way people find your business. You’re never going to be able to rank on top of every search for everyone everywhere, so what you want to do is make sure you rank highly to the most relevant people in the most relevant places on the most relevant devices.

How can you do this?

  • Optimise for suburbs: make sure that you tailor your website copy to mention not just your location, but all of the suburbs that you operate in as well.
  • Register for a Google MyBusiness account and make the listing rich in relevant content (including the mention of relevant locations and suburbs).
  • Use different tools to find out how you rank (listen to the podcast to find out which ones are best).
  • Manually check your ranking from different devices: borrow friends, family and colleagues’ phones, tablets and computers in different parts of town to see how your rankings differ.

Featured Snippets

They’re called featured snippets. Needless to say, if you can get your website content to appear as one of these it’s going to rank way better and get way more love than anything else. With an increased weight now being given to voice searches, featured snippets are only going to be more and more valuable as time goes on.

How to get featured in a snippet:

  • Check what search terms your website ranks in the top 10 for
  • Optimise your content for these search terms/phrases
  • Optimise for question type searches: “Where do I find the best food in Scarborough?” for example. This can include creating and FAQ page and inserting more questions into your content.
  • Target long tail key phrases: “Top 5 things to do in Perth” for example.
